The historic perfume trail

This project is the result of many years of research about the post Revolution period between 1795 and 1804 (when Napoleon became Emperor Napoleon I) in the French history. The year 1795 was chosen as a starting date because until then, Perfumes and any luxury were prohibited by Robespierre in the wake of the French revolution in 1789.

The first fragrance of a series of 12 in total will be available at a competitive price on this website for a limited period. The perfumes will then be sold exclusively in bookstores and heritage boutiques accompanied with a mini-book related to post-French revolution events and how England played a role.

Each perfume has been worked around botanicals and scents which would have been relevant during a specific event or in relation to a specific character of this era. The fragrances are entirely natural: THEY ARE GENUINELY LINKED TO THE INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE DURING THIS PERIOD (Fragrances available for sale in some museums and heritage boutiques are mostly created with synthetic ingredients!! It is a paradox!)...

The first perfume is called GERMINAL.  Next ones to follow are: FLOREAL; PRAIRIAL; MESSIDOR; THERMIDOR; FRUCTIDOR; VENDEMIAIRE; BRUMAIRE; FRIMAIRE and NIVÔSE, PLUVIÔSE, VENTÔSE.

On 12 Germinal year III (1st April 1795), misery is great in Paris. The last Sans-culottes (French without knee-breeches) enter the Convention assembly in Paris in an attempt to obtain bread and the return to the 1793 and restore the Constitution. But they are defeated by the Convention.

On a brighter note, Germinal is also the renewal of Nature with the Spring equinox. Plants and flowers blossom, prairies and fields are covered with flowers and green grass. Nature is back to life for the pleasure of our eyes and nose!

In the Revolutionary calendar, GERMINAL represents the Spring and Renewal. Although the Sans-Culottes were defeated, this led to the instauration of the Directoire when perfumes became fashionable again with the nomination of Napoleon Bonaparte (known to spray himself with Eau de Cologne) as Commander of the Interior army...

The Dictionary of the Gardener published in 1764 states that during Germinal months, 'the new vineyard must be cut, olive trees should be sown, trees should be pruned and it is the time to sow Indian carnation, Indian rose, to replant violets, hyacinths, tuberose and marigold and cover the tulips if there is frost at night'.

GERMINAL is inspired by the vineyard, with green notes, balsamic notes and the smell of spring flowers. Like all other perfumes by Isabelle Gellé, it is composed with 100% pure essential oils and botanical extract so does not smell like any commercial fragrance.

While in England, William Wilberforce carries on his struggle to abolish slavery and cools off his relationship with his Prime minister friend Pitt as a demonstration of his position anti-war with France, the date of  13 Vendémiaire an IV (5th October 1795) is marked by the nomination of a young general by Barras, then chief of the Army. General Vendémiaire alias Napoleon Bonaparte mission is to crush the royalist rebellion led by the National guards and the Sans-Culottes fighting to restore the monarchy. Bonaparte does  not hesitate to shoot the royalist rebels on the steps of Saint Roch church in the heart of Paris. The repression is bloody but his success will be rewarded by the marriage to the beautiful Josephine of Beauharnais and the commandment of the army of Italy..

In the Revolutionary calendar, VENDEMIAIRE is the first month and represents the Fall equinox and the month of grape harvest.

The Dictionary of the Gardener published in 1764 states that during Vendémiaire months, 'rye must be sown, fallow land must be ploughed, manure must be sprayed and land must be tossed while grape harvest should start. It is the time to graft peach trees onto almond trees and to sow iris, tulips, poppies and buttercups. Offshoot carnations and wallflowers.'

VENDEMIAIRE is inspired by the grape harvest and oak barrels, with woody and slightly smoky notes of oak, blended with floral notes such as geranium notes and balsamic notes. One could say that it is an Eau de toilette for those who return from the vineyards after a long day of harvest with the geranium expressing its relaxing effect. Like all other perfumes by Isabelle Gellé, it is composed with 100% pure essential oils and botanical extract so does not smell like any commercial fragrance.
